I love holiday shopping. It’s fun. If I could, I would be a personal shopper. Gifts are my thing. I love finding interesting and thoughtful buys for the people I love. But every now and then you come across a gift so outrageous you bust into instantaneous side-eye.

While checking out the gift finder on Anthropologie I came across the Vintage Books Boxed Set, $2175. Details read:

So let me get this straight. Six vintage books in a custom-made Baltic birch plywood case for 2 stacks? Nah. Not unless you just got it like that. If so, by all means. But with some creative research you can find those books and a cool shelf for about $500 or so on Amazon and even cheaper if you dig the old bookstores and indie online outlets. The holiday season is all about the hustle, don’t get caught out there!

For those of you who still read organically, you know about those late nights reading in bed. Often we fall asleep hanging on to every word on the page and in the morning the book is flipped all over the place and you have to find your space.

This was one of the first books that mattered to me. And to say it’s an important piece of American literature and a childhood classic is an understatement. I read “The Phantom Tollbooth” when I was in the second or third grade. It changed my perspective and pushed my imagination and sense of adventure in the most beautiful ways. Imagine if Seuss wrote a full length novel? Juster has that kind of poetry and fun in his words. To celebrate the occasion, there are two books: “The Annotated Phantom Tollbooth,” with notes by Leonard Marcus and a fiftieth-anniversary edition of the original, complete with a series of short essays by notable readers about the influence the book had. When I saw the shirt – a creme tee featuring the cover of Maya Angelou’s classic autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings , I had to look twice. It was on clearance for $5.99 and there were dozens of them. It was at a teeny bopper store. I was sad that the shoppers just hadn’t heard much about Maya Angelou. I bought the shirt and looked up the brand: Out of Print.

Out of Print celebrates the world’s great stories through fashion by featuring iconic book covers on tees and comfy sweatshirts. (Brave New World, Moby Dick, Catcher in the Rye to name a few) And part of the company’s mission statement says it all:

As a little girl, there was one thing I always looked forward to at school. The book fair. Oh how I remember the sticker books, tote bags and stories of Superfudge, Romona Quimby and so many more.

That’s right. Custom created biographies about rich bitches (and boys too). The coffee table style books are meant to capture the pup’s story as told by mom or dad. Their first day home, the first time they learned to jump on the couch or a picture of that torn up shoe.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know it seems steep, but don’t hate. It ain’t tricking if you got it. And the likes of Will Smith, Paris Hilton and other celebrity dog lovers are sure to be up on this.

Posh Puppy Memoirs is based in Riverdale, New York. And being posh isn’t just about luxury, they believe in giving back. They donate to the SPCA in an effort to pamper all pups.

Pommes Frites is an Etsy shop that takes forgotten items and turns them into awesome & useful things to have and wear. Everything in the shop is handmade by Miss. Kristen P. Texas.  One of her specialties is her hollow book safes, in which she takes a vintage book and turns it into a secret place to stash some of your valuables.  The books are hand carved, with the pages glued together but otherwise, left in tact. The hollow area is not lined in any way!  After carving with an x-acto, she takes the edges and sands them down with a dremel for a smooth finish, and then finished with a sealant.

The book is completely discreet, which means that it can be left in your bookshelf or laid out on your coffee table.  Check out what it looks like closed:
