Based on Mary Norton’s fantasy novel The Borrowers, Miyazaki’s adaptation tells the story of a family of teeny tiny people who live in a mysterious world beneath the floorboards of a human home. Naturally, the miniature sized daughter – Arrietty – develops a taboo friendship with a 12-year-old boy a zillion times her size. If its anything like Miyazaki’s “Ponyo” or “Spirited Away,” we won’t be disappointed.

I love holiday shopping. It’s fun. If I could, I would be a personal shopper. Gifts are my thing. I love finding interesting and thoughtful buys for the people I love. But every now and then you come across a gift so outrageous you bust into instantaneous side-eye.

While checking out the gift finder on Anthropologie I came across the Vintage Books Boxed Set, $2175. Details read:

A one-of-a-kind set in a custom-made case, curated by Kinsey Marable, who left his job as an investment banker to deal with a more exotic commodity: rare and out-of-print books. His passion to create distinctive libraries led him to select these books; the mahogany-stained Baltic birch bookshelf is custom built for the custom collection. The set includes The Artist in His Studio by Alexander Liberman (1988), The Blessing by Nancy Mitford (1951), The World in Vogue by Katharine Tweed, Bryan Holme, Jessica Daves and Alexander Liberman (1963), The Best of Beaton by Cecil Beaton and Truman Capote (1968), The Spirit of Paris by Paul Cohen-Portheim (1937) and The Face of the World by Cecil Beaton (1957).

So let me get this straight. Six vintage books in a custom-made Baltic birch plywood case for 2 stacks? Nah. Not unless you just got it like that. If so, by all means. But with some creative research you can find those books and a cool shelf for about $500 or so on Amazon and even cheaper if you dig the old bookstores and indie online outlets. The holiday season is all about the hustle, don’t get caught out there!

Justin Bua is one of the great artists of our generation – capturing hip hop culture in all that he does in only a way someone of the culture could. Now we see that in The Legends of Hip Hop out today.
The book is an intimate and poignant look at the visionaries and the pioneers who have helped build and mold the world of hip hop.

Bua profiles and paints fifty key figures, including everyone from Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash to President Obama and Jay-Z, providing a portrait of each legend in a style reminiscent of the great masters. The artwork is accompanied by an engaging autobiographical narrative that contextualizes the impact each icon has had on Bua’s personal life and on the hip-hop culture at large. With a foreword by Chuck D, this landmark volume is more than a celebration of hip hop; it is the definitive word on the subject as told by Bua, one of hip hop’s leading artists and a legend in his own right.

Buy it on his site where you can also find information on his Bay Area and LA book tour.

My love affair with Out of Print started with a Maya Angelou t-shirt. It featured the cover of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings but since we featured the company back then, they’ve added tote bags, phone cases and eReader jackets to the clothing collection.

It is the gift for bookworms. They specialize in the epic books in literary history. The Great Gatsby, Invisible Man, Moby Dick, Clockwork Orange, to name a few. iPhone covers and eReader jackets for Kindles, Nooks and iPads too. If you want to go all out, you can get the shirt x tote x cover combination.

People have been studying the throne before Jay-Z was officially king, but Georgetown University has made it an official class. The course, “Sociology of Hip-Hop: Jay-Z” is a 3 credit course offered this semester. I figured it would be taught by Toure but noted educator and author Michael Eric Dyson is giving out the grades.

RapFix interviewed Jigga and he had this to say:

“Well obviously Jay-Z is one of the greatest entertainers of the world today,” he said. “Not only is he a remarkable rhetorical genius, he’s also a man of deep sympathy and empathy for those who are lost and vulnerable, but especially under-educated youth of all cultures and stripes.”

The course covers Jay-Z’s book “Decoded,” Adam Bradley’s “Book of Rhymes,” Zack O’Malley Greenburg’s “Empire State of Mind,” as well as other articles and films about hip-hop in general. I wish they had this as an elective when I was in school.

I sat down and plugged in to Sunday’s premiere of ABC’s storybook-inspired “Once Upon a Time.” I love a good fairytale twist and no one can blow your mind quite like the writers behind cult favorite “Lost.” I wasn’t the only one tuning in, the first episode drew in 12.8 million.

But the series already has some competition. Friday, NBC brings it with “Grimm,” a drama inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales. It takes place in Portland and follows Detective Nick Burkhardt a descendant of elite criminal profilers known as “Grimms,” charged with keeping balance between humanity and the mythological creatures of the world. Peep the extended preview over at NBC.

Celebrating the human billboards of North Korea’s Mass Games, these visual artworks involve the synchronized movement of up to tens of thousands of participants. Often they work together to collectively display large images by the perfectly timed raising of single colored pages from a book of printed sheets. Traditionally, it celebrates strong nationalist themes and symbolism of their country’s leaders. When we come together, we do big and beautiful things.

A celebration of literary brilliance and essential childhood reading. A round of applause for Norton Juster please.

“You may not see it now,” said the Princess of Pure Reason, looking knowingly at Milo’s puzzled face, “but whatever we learn has a purpose and whatever we do affects everything and everyone else, if even in the tiniest way. Why, when a housefly flaps his wings, a breeze goes round the world; when a speck of dust falls to the ground, the entire planet weighs a little more; and when you stamp your foot, the earth moves slightly off its course. Whenever you laugh, gladness spreads like the ripples in the pond; and whenever you’re sad, no one anywhere can be really happy. And it’s much the same thing with knowledge, for whenever you learn something new, the whole world becomes that much richer.”
-Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth

This was one of the first books that mattered to me. And to say it’s an important piece of American literature and a childhood classic is an understatement. I read “The Phantom Tollbooth” when I was in the second or third grade. It changed my perspective and pushed my imagination and sense of adventure in the most beautiful ways. Imagine if Seuss wrote a full length novel? Juster has that kind of poetry and fun in his words. To celebrate the occasion, there are two books: “The Annotated Phantom Tollbooth,” with notes by Leonard Marcus and a fiftieth-anniversary edition of the original, complete with a series of short essays by notable readers about the influence the book had. There’s also an incredible essay over at the <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/10/17/111017fa_fact_gopnik" target_"blank"> New Yorker

Johnny Depp always finds ways to top his last great performance. A turn as Dr. Seuss could king them all.

It’s sure to be wacky, whimsical and wonderful! The Hollywood Reporter says Johnny Depp and his production company are developing a live-action film about the life of Dr. Seuss. Depp has the option to star as the famed author and we hope he takes the opportunity. I mean really, who better to capture the brilliance behind “The Cat In The Hat,” “Oh The Places You’ll Go” and “Green Eggs and Ham?” Not only that, who else can balance the wacky with the real life grit of the one man who was both Theodor Geisel and Dr. Seuss. If Depp decides to stay behind the scenes, who do you think should take on the task?
