What We’re Reading: The Night Circus

Despite critics incessant need to compare Erin Morgenstern’s first book to series such as the incomparable Harry Potter books and the infectious Twilight series – The Night Circus holds its own.

Surely you’ve heard of the book that got Morgenstern a hefty six-figure advance with the rights sold to 30 foreign publishers off the back. The book that Summit Entertainment, (the company behind the Twilight movies) secured the film rights to. And yes, David Heyman, the producer of the “Harry Potter” movies, is in negotiations to lead the silver screen adaptation. Yes, it is the book of the fall.

And I must say, it’s worth the hype. It’s not an epic series set in wizarding school for kids. Nor is it reeking with teen love triangles or a beef between vamps and wolves. It’s a book that takes it’s magic and mystery seriously. Set in the 19th century, the story plays out within a sophisticated circus that travels the world and only opens its doors at night. It’s the story of two young illusionists forcefully engaged in a mysterious battle of magical skill and it’s also a romance waiting to happen. It’s dark yet mystifying, sophisticated and whimsical. Yes, you want to read all about Le Cirque des Reves – delve into The Night Circus.
