Finally…A Use For Phone Books.

I’m not entirely sure why phone books are still in existence, with the dominance of this small thing called the internet taking over the planet.¬† However, without them, Alex Queral wouldn’t have been able to create these amazing three-dimensional portraits.¬† Using a small, sharp knife, Queral peels away the pages like the skin of an onion to reveal the resulting portraits shown here.¬† via Design Fetish

Very unique medium for art. Very cool outcome!

I followed the link to looked at the other art that Mr. Queral has on his site, and was especially impressed with the Albert Einstein piece. Einstein’s hair must have been painstaking to execute. Wow.

I am with you about the phone books. My organization has a number of complexes/sites throughout our city. Each year, a book is delivered for every person with a telephone number! How wasteful is that?! I mean, I get that it brings in advertising revenue, and that they are handy from time to time, and other stuff that I’m probably not aware of. But come on – one for each telephone number – we’re usually calling each other! Up until two years ago, it was even worse, because we used to get a an additional book from a secondary carrier.

I feel sick when I come in to see two pallets of shrink-wrapped phone books, knowing that (and, I am grateful at least for this) we will probably keep only 1/4 of them and will send the rest of the brand new books to a local school that earns money for each telephone book that they recycle.

    That’s my piece about that.

    But, yes. Very cool art.

I left a comment on this post a few days ago. I don’t know what happened. It was a little longer than usual, but totally relevant. I’m disappointed that it disappeared.
