Last week, I was forced had the pleasure of attending The Art of the Disney Princess Event. Why send the guy of Nerdlike you ask? Because Jazzy, Jane and NickiDee are all mean spirited. But that’s for another post. Instead of complaining, I packed up my camera and headed out for what turned out to be a pretty incredible event.
The Art of the Disney Princess is exactly what it sounds like, a celebration of the animated empire’s fair ladies. Disney commissioned 10 artists from Disney Global Consumer Products to re-imagine the Disney princesses. The results were dope to say the least. The event, hosted at the Zune LA house/building, was set up like an art gallery. The front room housed a collection of art pieces accompanied by its Disney Couture clothing counterpart. Each piece represented a different princess in the artists own unique styling. Looking at some of these instantly made me think of our good friend over at Inny Vinny. She may have lost her mind in here, despite her aversion to princessy things. The second room upstairs was more like an art museum with pieces on the wall. From the abstract to a little weird, each piece retained the essence of the original princess, but somehow set it apart in a way that they felt authentic and real. Gone were the traditional aesthetics of the Disney cookie cutter princess. These artists had introduced the princesses to a whole new world (no pun intended). In addition to the transformation of the princesses, you could see each artists individual style and inspiration. Several pieces even escaped the realm of Disney and looked like pieces anyone would hang on their wall.
Some artists even went beyond the actual pieces and clothing and created jewelery and accessories. (The Disney Couture princess collection will be available in February at Kitson) I could almost see Jazzy rocking a certain princess purse and Jane keeping it fly in the black snow white inspired black vee-neck with the accompanying charm necklace. As you can see in the pictures, these pieces were expertly crafted and would look great on any princess.
The Art of The Disney Princess event was held to promote the book with the same name. It is available now for $40, but can be found on Amazon for $26.40. I would highly recommend the book to anyone with a slight interest in Disney, and of course any woman who ever dreamed of being a princess. In fact, I received one for going to the event and was quickly conned out of it by a certain 7 year-old. I guess she was right, why would I want a book with a bunch of princesses in it. Well missy, little do you know, but princesses are for boys, also.
