Sony Reader: The Daily Edition

By JaneGoldenarms

A lot of book enthusiasts are on the fence about the e-reader takeover, because there really is nothing like turning your own pages or reading an inscription someone wrote just for you. But let’s be clear, there’s something tempting about being able to have all your books at your fingertips.

The Kindle, the Nook and the Sony Reader are at the forefront of the debate. But the one that seems to get the most shade is the latter. Until now, Sony didn’t have wireless access but they did have the sexiest of e-readers, clearly borrowing pages out of Apple’s book of design and marketing.¬† Like the iPod family, Sony has a family of readers and price points. $199 gets you the Pocket (basic for beginners like the shuffle), $299 gets you the Touch (touch screen) and $399 gets you the Daily (wireless, finally).

The Reader Daily Edition is just what they need to compete in the big battle of books gone digital.

For $399 (ouch),  you get wireless access to Sony’s eBook store allowing bookworms to browse, purchase and download books, newspapers and magazines. Find compatible sites and get your USB out for personal document and content download. Poor world of print. And for basic wireless connectivity there is no monthly fees or transaction charges. For someone who reads well over a dozen new books a year, it could easily be worth it.

The seven-inch wide, touch screen display reads in both portrait and landscape. The Daily Edition has the look and feel of an overgrown Nano, sexy and durable. Plus, it has enough internal memory to hold over a thousand eBooks. For the book ballers, you can buy memory cards for extra storage. Sony is taking pre-oders now and shipping throughout December.

Me? I’m still rocking old-fashioned books. I am tempted by the iTunes like options the digital books offer. But I will be holding out for a few more months, as e-readers gain popularity the options will expand and prices will certainly drop. But for those of you with long money, go for it and let us know what you like about it.

I really enjoy getting away from my computer and diving into books. I hope this doesn't ruin paper books. (they should be made of Hemp not trees)

I also think it is nice for your eyes to have a break. :)
