No Whitewashing, Please.

People would like to think that race is a non-issue these days, but those people are blind. It’s no secret that the publishing world is largely white, but a recent issue with a book cover has caused quite the stir in the alleged melting pot.

Liar, a psychological teen thriller by white Australian writer Justine Larbalestier, is a book about a black girl named Micah, a compulsive liar who learns the hard way. But the publishing company wanted the girl on the cover to be white. They claim “which was intended to symbolically reflect the narrator‚Äôs complex psychological makeup.” The Root covered the story thoroughly, and after a good fight, the cover will now feature a sista and the book will be released later this fall.
