While the entire world is busy tweeting about what the hell bubble boy is doing, an interracial couple was denied a marriage license today…and it almost went unnoticed.
Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in a Louisiana Parish was quoted as saying that he refused to marry Beth Humphrey, 30, and 32-year-old Terence McKay, because he was concerned about their hypothetical children. In his experience, ‘interracial couples don’t last’ and he doesn’t believe he’s mistreated anyone in this matter, or the four other times he denied licenses. Bardwell was also quoted as saying this:
“I’m not a racist. I just don’t believe in mixing the races that way,” Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. “I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else.”
What.the.hell.
And just in case you are as pissed off as I am…don’t worry, the ACLU sent a letter to the Louisiana Judiciary Committee, which oversees the state justices of the peace, asking them to investigate Bardwell, as well as asked that “the most severe sanctions available, because such blatant bigotry poses a substantial threat of serious harm to the administration of justice.” via Huffington Post

When I first read this, I was amazed by this guys stupidity. I am married to a bi-racial man that actually is 90% of the time mistaken for being all white, so we get our stares and out sarcastic smirks of dissapproval, but not only is it annoying, its so 100 years ago already. I don't think my kids will grow up "confused" or "unhappy". Its all in the way that I raise them.
This guy is insane. I can't help but wonder how many times he's done some ridiculous stuff like this. He's ancient, he's been around for awhile I'm sure. I just love how he says he has "pilies and piles" of black friends like black people are stacks of tissue or something.

Why do we have patience for people like this? This judge should be removed from office for stupidity…not to mention for blatantly violating the couple's right to marry.
I can't believe this is the first time in this man's history that the issue has come up. These types of justices perform tons of marriages a year. I bet he's been rejecting mixed couples for years and it's just this time the story made national news. Quite sad.
