Howling Wolf BBQ Sauce [Review & Giveaway]

Out of Wyoming comes Howling Wolf Sauces, a company started by a couple [literally] of masterminds. One a pottery genius, and the other, a classically trained Chef whom has always had a passion for sauces. They recently closed their Cafe, which was known for their outstanding BBQ sauces and ribs. Featured in Jane & Michael Stern’s Roadfood, their sauces are widely available in local grocery stores around Wyoming, Idaho and locally here in Los Angeles County.

Their sauces are known for their sweet, sour, and spicy flavors, which translate into unique flavor combinations that take on wonderfully different characteristics when used in ways not traditionally associated with BBQ.

I was sent one of Howling Wolf’s signature sauces, the Cranberry Orange. While I have typically used orange juice in my marinade, I was intrigued by the use of cranberries and what the tartness would bring to the table.

Since we were right in the middle of moving, I decided to try the sauce using a mom’s best friend; a crock pot. I lightly seasoned some chicken thighs [using garlic salt, pepper and Emeril's Original Essence] and placed them in the crock pot.

Then, I poured almost the entire bottle into the pot, turning the thighs to make sure they were completely covered.

I cooked it on Low for roughly 5 hours [this is dependent upon your crock pot, mine cooks pretty quickly] and when I opened it back up, I had this:

I literally only had one piece of chicken to shoot because they disappeared so quickly in my house. The meat was so tender, it fell off the bone, and my son had a pulled chicken sandwich. My husband had a few pieces with some vegetables and I had one, lonely piece [all that was left] with some potatoes.

It smelled so good while cooking that my dad, who was helping me move, was willing to eat it raw so that he could taste it.

Sidenote: I also used it as a dip for both popcorn chicken and shrimp..it was great with those as well.

    I’d use it for our Fourth of July BBQ on the beach! There’s nothing better than charcoal grilled meat with a good bbq sauce.

      It was excellent. A little tangier than I expected, but not sour. It actually tasted more like a gourmet sauce, than a traditional BBQ sauce. If I had any left, I would probably coat some catfish in it, then dip it in Panko crumbs and fry. I want to try the Original now!

    Well, to be honest, I may actually use this to make a little pulled pork. I do use OJ in my pulled pork recipe so this with the cranberry might make a great addition. Smoke the pork for about 10 hours, then pull and toss with the warmed sauce. This sounds like it should make some amazazing sammiches…

    I’m already a big fan of the Howling Wolfe sauces, I’ve had all three and the cranberry orange is by far my favorite. If I got a free bottle, I would use it on my blue cheese bacon burgers – it rocks! (hoping I win)

    I’m a vegetarian, so I think I would use it on a tempeh sandwich. Crispy tempeh, swiss cheese, cranberry orange BBQ sauce, and romaine lettuce on a toasted sesame seed bun. Yum!

    JR, my hubby says he loved the looks of the chicken, & he’s a huge wing fan. So I think he would make BBQ cranberry orange wings!

    If I were to win a bottle of this cranberry orange BBQ sauce, first, I would plug in the ipod and crank my favorite flame-broiled tunes, such as Wendy Rene’s Bar-B-Q. Then I would use it to season and smoke tofu to make one of the tastiest tofu sandwiches in town.

    Well, I’m a fan of good ole’ BBQ chicken and my husband likes pork chops and ribs, so we’d have to share I guess! I think all of Howling Wolf’s sauces look yummy!

    My husband loves using this sauce and I love eating the result! We use all of the howling wolf sauces, but this one is our favorite. Great on chicken but his favorite way to use it is on BBQ ribs that he slow cooks in the oven. Makes me hungry just to post this.

  15. I would marinate fresh tuna steaks in it. Have some on the side to dip when served. Or maybe even fresh rockfish. yum yum yum

    I would put it to great use. Slather it all over chicken on July 4th, put it over mashed potatoes, dip my dinner rolls in it with added cracked pepper, use it with rub to make some delicious bbq ribs, and made the best baked beans. So many uses, only 1 bottle, must order…
